Healthy Living 9 covers a variety of topics related to personal and community health, as well as positive relationships and the components of the human body. Students will be learning about and discussing an array of health related topics in a safe and inclusive classroom setting.

 

Course Focus

The general curriculum outcomes or primary goals for this course are as follows:

 

Students will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate positive self-identity that effectively enables them to manage their health, relationships, and interactions with the world

  • Think critically and make informed decisions to enhance health of self, those around oneself, and within a global context

  • Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills that facilitate positive relationships between themselves and the world

 

The Healthy Living 9 curriculum is divided into three sections that will be explored through the year: Healthy Self, Healthy Relationships and Healthy Community

 

We will explore these these sections through the following units:

  • Nutrition

  • Mental Health, Conflict Resolution, and Personal Safety

  • Substance Abuse and Addiction

  • Human Reproduction, Sexuality, and Intimacy

  • Career Exploration

 

Expectations:

  • Be prepared: arrive on time and with necessary supplies (3 ring binder or duotang, looseleaf, pen / pencil)

  • Follow school and classroom expectations

  • Have a positive attitude

  • Respect yourself, your classmates and your teacher, and ensure that everyone feels safe and free of judgement

  • Complete all assessments on time

 

Assessment: Students will be evaluated according to the Grade 9 Healthy Living outcomes, through both formal and informal assessments consisting of: projects, reading, presentations, group work, discussions, written assignments and quizzes.

 

Every outcome will be assessed on a 1-4 scale. A 1 or a 2 are NOT meeting expectations, where as a 3 or a 4 are meeting the expectations.          

1 - Limited knowledge and understanding of content and concepts . Limited application of related skills.

2 - Developing or partial knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Developing in the application of the related skills.

3 - Competent knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Appropriate application of the related skills.

4 - In-depth knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Able to extend the application of related skills

 

Absences and Missed Time: If you miss class, it is your responsibility to see Miss Chisholm to find out and complete any work you may have missed. You can come to my class before or after school, during lunch time extra help, or, email me (kchisholm@hrce.ca) to discuss missed work. If a student is absent the day an assignment or project is due, it is their responsibility to pass in the work the day they return to school. If a student is absent the day a quiz is written, they are expected to write the quiz the following class.

 

Late / Missing Work: All students are provided with a reasonable due date for assignments. If the due date for an assignment is missed, it will be at the discretion of the teacher and principal to extend the deadline. Students who do not adhere to the extended deadline will have missed that opportunity to demonstrate achievement towards the outcomes addressed in that particular assignment.

 

Power School: Students, parents and guardians have access to PowerSchool through the CPJH website. Here you will be able to see assessment marks and missing and overdue work.

Extra Help: Extra help will be offered at lunchtime on Thursday. If you need help outside of this time, please speak with Ms. Chisholm to arrange an alternate time.
